Traditional karate teaches discipline,
respect, and courtesy. It teaches that karate is studied so that you do not
have to fight and to avoid conflicts using your brain rather than your
physical skills. Karate is for defence only, hence the teaching, "there
is no first attack in karate." Anything worthwhile does not come
quickly or easily. Karate falls into this category. We hope that by starting
karate you all have aspirations to become a better person, gain some new
friends, aspire to becoming a black belt, and then hopefully you will find a
life-long love of the martial arts and carry on with it throughout your life.
Every single one of you has the potential inside you to become a great
karateka (student of karate). For some of you, it will come naturally and a
bit more easily than for others, but the great thing about karate is that is
for everyone. Some of you will struggle and have to try harder and longer to
get things, but if you are persistent and practice, everyone can do it. Karate ultimately is about perfecting
your character. How does one perfect their character? Mostly we find our
character is perfected when we are pushed and when we struggle. For example,
keeping on going when you think you can go no further, completing a task when
you think it is impossible, stopping and thinking before responding in anger
to an event, learning to respect others... these are all things karate can
and will teach you if you are open to learning these lessons. Our philosophy is based on traditional karate values as stated
in the Dojo Kun (morals of the dojo) shown below:
